Deterring Theft When Moving Into A New Apartment

Posted on: 8 April 2016

If you had just signed the lease on a new apartment rental, you will soon be hauling your belongings to this new location. When someone is in the process of moving, they are unfortunately also at risk for theft. This is a time when people are usually distracted, making them easy targets for theft as a result. Here are some steps you can take to deter robbers from trying to steal your belongings as you are in the process of moving them into your new unit.

Change Locks Before Moving In

Your landlord will most likely give you keys to the apartment unit when you sign your agreement. Unfortunately, there is no way to know who else may have a copy of this key if the landlord did not take the time to change the locks beforehand. To ensure you are kept safe and that your belongings will not be taken when you are moving back and forth between your old and new homes, have a locksmith like Scottsdale Locksmithing put in new locks before you place any items in the unit. Make sure to let your landlord know you intend on doing this and give them a copy of the key. Have the locksmith add locks to windows as well if they are not already present.

Be Aware Of Your Actions

When moving into your new unit, be aware that others may be watching your actions. To keep people wondering about your situation, make sure to give a wave to your apartment when you intend on leaving for a while. This will make others think someone else is inside, possibly keeping them from being nosy and snooping your unit while you are away. If you drive, beep your horn as you leave as well to make the guise of another being in your unit even more believable. It is a good idea to leave lights on inside your unit when you are not at home. Switch which lights you use each night so those watching cannot determine a pattern, indicating you may not really be at home.

Give The Impression Of Security

If it will take you several days or weeks to move into your new place, you may want to exude the illusion of having a security system on the premises to help keep people from trying to break in at times you are not at home. You can always have an alarm service come to your apartment to install a system to help protect your home from an invasion. This however is not always cost-effective if you do not plan on living at the apartment long-term. You can however add some alarm stickers to a window or door of your apartment to make others think you have an alarm set up. Another idea is to add a pretend security camera near your front entryway. These have blinking LED lights on the each unit, making it appear as if you are monitoring any outdoor activity.
